As They Are is a portrait experience created to document people honestly — in their own space, at their own pace, without posing or pressure.

These sessions are unhurried. They take place in the home or another familiar setting and are shaped by conversation, presence, and small everyday moments. The result is considered portraits and candid images that reflect the person or couple as they truly are.

This work is about:

  • Identity
  • Memory
  • Presence

Each session is approached with care, patience, and respect. There is time to talk, to pause, to rest if needed. Nothing is rushed.

These are photographs that feel true, not staged, and that will matter long after the moment has passed.

The WHY

As a child I LOVED spending time with my Nan at her retirement village. I loved being around all the people there and listening to their stories. Over the years, I learned how to play card games, how to knit, play lawn bowls and many other things... the community there imparted so much onto me. I also loved listening to my Pop tell stories, usually about he mischief he got up to as a kid. I believe that as we age, we have things to share and to pass on. I believe in preserving memories and ensuring people's legacy remains, even after they pass. Sometimes we want more than just a photograph. We want the person.

This is why I am creating AS THEY ARE.

As They Are is an ongoing personal and professional portrait project.

By booking a session, clients understand and agree that:

  • Selected images will be shared as part of the As They Are project
  • The photographed person’s first name and a short written story or quote may be shared alongside the images
  • Images, stories and behind the scenes may be used on my website, social media, and in printed or exhibition contexts related to this project

This sharing is done respectfully and with care, and stories are never sensationalised or taken out of context.

If there are sensitivities around names, details, or how the story is shared, this can be discussed prior to the session.

If a private, non-shared session is preferred, this can be arranged by request and may be subject to a different pricing structure.
